With the pressure to get things done and deliver results, leaders often skip over the foundational elements of team development. This leads to teams underperforming and not realising their potential. In complex and dynamic environments leaders may be excused for not focussing on team development, but it comes with the huge cost of ineffectiveness and poor performance. If a leader wants to build a highly effective team there are 3 integral things to focus on. By focussing on these 3 aspects of team development leaders can position their team to maximise the team's potential and create a collective advantage. That is they can empower the team to achieve much more that each of the team members can do on their own. 1\. Set up the essential team attributes. These are the essential attributes that set the foundation for building a highly effective team. The essential attributes include; - The right mix of people with the relevant skills, knowledge, and experience. - A charter that defines them as a functional team. - A compelling purpose that focuses team members on a common objective. **2. Align team enabling conditions.** The following conditions enable the team to maximise its effectiveness. Aligning and utilising them have a significant effect on team performance. The enabling conditions needed are; - Robust processes and structure to enable performance with minimal interference. - Sponsorship and a supportive environment to enable collaboration. - Coaching to help identify gaps, get clarity on objectives, and enhance team dynamics. **3. Establish good team dynamics.** With the essential attributes and enabling conditions in order the overall effectiveness of the team is reliant on good team dynamics. Good team dynamics can be identified by: - The **TRUST** they display in their actions and relationships. - **SUPPORT** team members give to each other to benefit the team. - How they **CHALLENGE** norms to identify better ways of working. - Having a clear, compelling, and aligned **PURPOSE**. - How they demonstrate and uphold **ACCOUNTABILITY** with all stakeholders. - How they **ADAPT** to complex and dynamic challenges. - The way they consistently deliver **RESULTS** and create **IMPACT**.
